Selection for height by women no doubt plays a role. Studies seem to suggest that most women will prefer a 6'2'' fat, bald, unemployed homeless man over a 5'5'' surgeon of world renown. Ok, a stretch.

But some studies suggest that there is truth to that idea. http://www.mendeley.com/research/height-reproduct

Methinks back when life was nasty, brutish and short, tall men had the advantage of greater attractiveness but the problem of increased calorie needs in a food-limited world. In the modern world (at least until the next financial crisis), the calorie problem faced by taller men is removed.
