Bring Back the Despair

I was explaining to someone today why I’m not watching the American-ified version of Top Gear, and the subject of The Office came up. I can’t stand the U.S. version, not least because I miss the despair-driven humor of the BBC original. The same argument holds for Top Gear, in that I can’t imagine an American version that gets to the combination of pathos, prat-childishness and witty idiocy of the original, so I won’t watch.

Apropos of having mentioned BBC’s The Office, here are the last ten minutes of the original series. It killed me, at the time.
