Fascinating how it became a big deal that Bill Gates released proto-malarial mosquitoes at the TED conference last week in Long Beach. I was sitting about 20 meters from the stage, so I got to see the whole mosquito thing up close and personal. No-one panicked; everyone thought it was an amusing bit of strange shtick by Gates. And then Drudge got hold of it, and the rest is history.
