I {Heart} Department Stores
I keep mulling a weekend Telegraph article about the resurgence, at least in the U.K., of department stores. Granted, that may say more about me than about the article, because I loathe shopping, but the article's upshot certainly reflects a recent behavior I have been seeing from myself and others.
The gist: I don't like shopping in the first place, and wandering from specialty-store-to-specialty-store is inefficient given how over-committed I am. So, when I need to make a guerilla strike for clothes it's straight to Nordstrom's -- then bought, done, out.
I know, I know, a sample of 1, but to the extent that behavior is increasingly widespread, could a turnaround in the struggling department store business be underway?

The new John Lewis store in Cambridge, UK is doing such record business that after 8 weeks they are setting on an additional 100 staff.
Interestingly, Tesco seems to be heading towards being a department store! from its humble food store beginnings.
Hey Paul
Enjoy your blog.
JWN is on sale "half price"!

I failed miserably finding anything in specialty stores, and then bought a whole bunch of stuff in one fell swoop at Century 21 last week. I'm with you.
