Content is King. Or Not. Maybe.
Over the weekend the cries went up again at the big CES show that content is king. That may be true in future, but it's never been easy to prove in the past by stock prices. Case in point: The following figure showing the most trafficked news sites on the interweb:
The most-trafficked sites are content kings, right? Hugely levered to the current online advertising boom? Well, scan the following figure showing stock performance for the public companies in the group, with the exception of Google.
With the exception of Microsoft (which is up for other reasons), the public content companies represented on this list of top online news sites -- Yahoo, New York Times, and News Corp. -- are all lagging the S&P 500, and down over the last year. I love content, but, from an investing standpoint, if content has been king, I'd sure hate to be court jester.
