Project: Deciphering Financial Newsletter Speak

A quick project for readers. Anyone think the preceding snippet from a well-known investments newsletter out today actually means anything?

Cyclically, 2008 is a pivotal year. The beginning of the year will look much different than the end. Looking back on 2008 people will be astonished by how much perceptions shifted and change occurred. Friends will be enemies and enemies will be friends. Amid all of this social turmoil there will be an ever increasing number of fads.

Reminds of something one of the run-amok prophets in Holy Grail would say.

Sounds more like madlibs or a horrorscope to me.

What a gas! You can see whatever you want to.

"Cyclically 2008 is a pivotal year".

The dictionary suggests that a pivot is a fixed pin or short axis, on the end of which a wheel or other body turns.

So basic physics tells me this means as cycles go, nothing will happen in 2008 because it is the pivot at the centre of the wheel that turns. No? Am I missing something? Or were the PR monkeys/ analysts who write these releases exempt from Physics in school? Just wondering...

Sounds almost like the earlier contest entries.

Cyclically, 2008 is a pivotal year.

According to the OED Cyclic means "belonging in a chronological cycle" As Shefaly points out above this sentence means that nothing will happen in 2008 as it is the year around which all other events shall change.

The beginning of the year will look much different than the end.

Does the passing of time "look" like anything. Certainly the events that occur during the year will look different. There is some doubt about which years are being referred to although the phrase "the year" does seem to suggest that the reference is to 2008. So what is being said is that things will change during the year. Well Duh! Thanks for the tip it very helpful.

Looking back on 2008 people will be astonished by how much perceptions shifted and change occurred.

Name 6 such people and prove that they will be astonished.

Friends will be enemies and enemies will be friends.

Does this mean that my mate andrew will hate me for a while and then like me for a while? Probably because I ate the last slice of pizza. Should I invest in pizza futures?

Amid all of this social turmoil there will be an ever increasing number of fads.

Right I think I have figured out what is being said: Basically this year will see the dominiant paradigm subverted for greater synergy in the economic-rationalist sub-culture culminating in an alien invasion in which we will be saved by Matt Damon.

There is turmoil in one of your friendships -- but do not worry too much about it. This person is going through a lot of uncertainty in their life, and there isn't anything you can do to help. The fact that their problems are affecting your relationship is something you should make them aware of, but do not blame them for it. Just let them know that you are there for them if and when they need you. They'll be back soon, and they'll be grateful for your patience.

There is turmoil in one of your prime brokers -- but do not worry too much about it. This broker is going through a lot of uncertainty in their life, and there isn't anything you can do to help. The fact that their problems are affecting your credit grade is something you should make them aware of, but do not blame them for it. Just let them know that you are there for them if and when they need you. They'll be back soon, and they'll be grateful for your patience.

Aside from reinforcing that famous saw about Wall Street that "nobody knows nothing," that passage makes me wonder which field has more meaningless but impressive sounding gibberish, investing newsletters or post modern literary criticism.
