Complexity, Cell Phones and Freeway Flatulence
Fun study out from researchers at University of Utah showing that cell phone users drive slowly, don't change lanes often enough, and are generally irritating on the freeways. Why do we care? Because, as in all complex systems, small delays cause massive slowdowns when generalized to larger system with tight linkages.
Anyway, best quote from the related Reuters story is this one from study co-author Peter Martin:
It's a bit like breaking wind in the elevator. Everyone suffers.

I just heard this story tonight on NPR! I think insurance premiums should go up for cell phones users. It might lead to better statistics for all of us who DON'T use them while driving!
