Viacom: Microsoft as Stick in Google’s Eye Over Copyright

Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman was on CNBC this morning talking about his company’s new advertising deal with Microsoft. The interviewer was the usually astute David Faber, but he missed a key Dauman comment.

It came at the end of a longer answer about his rationale for choosing Microsoft, not Google, and he muttered something like, “And they have more respect for copyright”. Faber moved on, but I’d like to have known more. Did Dauman really pick Microsoft largely to punish Google over the YouTube spat? That’s a big deal, if true.

If choosing Microsoft over Google really was an attempt to “punish” Google then I have to say that was a bad move by Microsoft. The question that still remains, however, is what caused them to overlook Google’s main rival Yahoo?

You mean VIACOM CEO, not VERIZON CEO – the Verizon CEO is Ivan Seidenberg.
