Quant Funds ... More or Less

I had an interesting chat on the phone just now with someone from BBC's More or Less program. The show's premise -- a weekly journey through the abused world of numbers -- is catnip for a data junkie like me, so I thought I should point the program out to readers.

I'll be on the show next Thursday talking quant funds, and try the fun fun numerical quiz from its site.

Radio 4 serves up great crumpets for the thinking men and women of Britain. I got 9 on that quiz :-)

I wish it were the average numeracy level in the UK... :-(

How about a journey for the abused world of grammar?

"travels into the world numbers"

"Do you think you are top the class?"

And to cap it all, one of the questions is worded so badly as to be unanswerable if not read around:

"If the retirement age is raised to 67, what proportion of males currently living to 65 will die before they receive a penny of their pension?"

To live to an age means that you live that far and then die. The answer to the question as worded is therefore 100%. What they probably meant was "live *past* 65".

Maybe I'm not top the class but like ne fule knos I know you should proofread stuff before publishing it, and if it's related to intelligence, proofread it twice.
