Traveling Time, Immanuel Velikovsky, etc.

The San Diego fires aren’t over, but I’m very briefly on the road. I’m on a one-day up-and-back trip to San Francisco to do a previously-scheduled (private) presentation on venture capital, .400 hitting and the redemption of Immanuel Velikovsky.

I’ll try to post slides here later this week.

    Velikovsky. Wow, I haven’t heard that name since the old Usenet days.
    I would love to hear more about where he can be redeemed, and what valuable prizes I can redeem him for.

    Ah, I found your slideshow via google. I see where you’re going, but I don’t think it redeems believing that Venus hovered over the Earth in order to part the Red Sea ;-)

    Ha, fair point. I was taking a certain amount of artistic liberty with the word “redemption” in Velikovsky’s case. It was more the idea that catastrophism got a bad name after the Velikovsky affair, and it needs to seen as less tarnished than it has become.
    With respect to Venus hovering over Earth to part the Red Sea, or some of his other more outrageous ideas, well … I’ll quote Stephen Gould:

    “Velikovsky is neither crank nor charlatan — although to state my opinion and to quote one of my colleagues, he is at least gloriously wrong…. Velikovsky would rebuild the science of celestial mechanics to save the literal accuracy of ancient legends”
