The Trouble with Beta Invites

I get a lot of invites to trial new beta program/services/products, etc., and I only have time to try a subset of them. It amazes me, however, how many people invite me to try something, without actually having a succinct, benefit-driven way of telling me why I should bother.

Not to pick on Wixi, but it was the following email today that put me over the edge:

Hello ,

After successfully launching at Techcrunch40, Wixi is extending our next round of Wixi Beta invites. We are happy to announce that you have been selected to participate in the Wixi Beta Test program with UNLIMITED storage to upload and share all of your media files!

Create your wixi, add new friends and share files with them!

Please click here to start your registration (if the link doesn’t work, copy and paste into your browser):

We hope to see you soon inside with the other Wixi Beta testers. We’d love to get your feedback and learn about your experiences. If you have interest in interviewing Arthur about the product, or would like any further information for a write-up, please don’t hesitate to contact me directly. Our digital press kit – with bios, background and images – can be found online at: http://main.wixi.com/wixi_about.php.

Right, but what the hell does it do and why should I bother?

    Hi there,
I understand you receive a lot of mails, I also do, but I think you might overlook the mails sometimes.
I don’t think the example you pointed at is that unclear, but that’s my personal opinion!

Heck, everyone needs their own wixi – they just don’t know it yet! ;-> :-D

  3. Arthur says:

    Hi Paul,
    Sorry to bother you -)
Wixi is a web-based media desktop.
If you’re looking for an online home for all of your text, music and videos, that you can access from anywhere and share with friends, look no further than Wixi. Files can be uploaded from your computer or added from the Web with no software to download. Thanks to the Wixi Player, videos can be played directly from the homepage you create – which has the look and feel of a typical desktop. Save time by uploading multiple files at once with the uploader tool.
Wixi is a mix between Box.net and MySpace; a social network focused on Media instead of profile.
We offer to all your readers UNLIMITED STORAGE. code on http://www.wixi.com : ‘havefun’
    Thanks for this post anyway.
    Arthur

I have invented a widget that’s designed to generate buzz and attract investors. The beta isn’t ready yet but I’ll invite you first Paul.

  5. Jonny Red says:

I agree with Jack. I didn’t find the beta invite from Wixi to be unclear at all.
