Maslow’s Hierarchy of Post-Industrial Needs

Here, according to a just-released survey from the Consumer Electronics Association, is what we should perhaps call Maslow’s hierarchy of post-industrial needs. It is, in other words, adults and teens Christmas 2007 wish lists:

Rank Adults Teens
1 Computers Clothes
2 Peace & happiness MP3 player
3 Big screen TV Video games
4 Clothes Computer
5 Money Cell phone

Come on, C.E.A. – are teens actually putting “mp3 players” or “cell phones” no their lists? No. They’re wanting iPods and iPhones – nothing else will do. Let’s call an Apple an Apple and give this survey some credibility!

My oldest daughter has an iPod and hates it. She wouldn’t touch an iPhone with a ten foot pole. That aside, clothes or just plain cash top her list and have since she was born. Son #1 wants a Creative Zen Stone MP3 Player and any cell phone (but isn’t getting one). Son #2 wants a PSP. Daughter #2 wants a Nintendo DS.
I’ll take peace and quiet. Happiness follows.
