Apple’s iPhone App Head-Fake

Sorry, I just don’t buy that Apple never planned to open up the iPhone for other apps. Steve Jobs has been around the industry for too long not to have had that in his plans all along. My guess is that he wanted, for stability and usability reasons, complete software control of the first iPhone iteration, and had always planned to open the thing up for the iPhone 2.0 release in February.

A similar view here from Steve Johnson.

Of course, Apple was always going to open up for more native apps. They key was to use the first 6 months or so to nail the user experience.
