Whoa, turns out today was B-day: The first time a retiring Baby Boomer ever applied for retirement benefits from the Feds:The first Baby Boomer applied today for Social Security benefits, a milestone marking the approaching retirement of a generation of Americans whose eligibility for government payouts threatens to overwhelm the federal budget.[via Bloomberg]
Kathleen Casey-Kirschling, a retired Maryland teacher who was born at 12:00:01 a.m. on Jan. 1, 1946, applied this afternoon for early retirement benefits. She'll become eligible to receive benefits in January when she turns 62.

Not quite. This story is not saying that Ms. Casey-Kirschling is the first baby boomer to apply for early retirement benefits. The story is that she, who happens to be the first baby boomer, has applied for benefits.
Applicants must be 61 years, 9 months old to apply for benefits. It's a reasonable guess that at least one person born between 1/1/1946 and 1/13/1946 has already applied.
