Want to Start a Virtual World? Be Sure to Play Hockey

After the Club Penguin news today, a colleague of mine sent me the following entertaining note concerning the top five kid-centric virtual worlds (based on Hitwise data):
Top 5, Runescape (UK), Webkinz (Can), ClubPenguin (Can), Stardoll (Sweden), Habbo (Finland) are all non-US companies. Further, they are all "cold" countries and other than the UK, good at hockey.

"Virtual world creation - why not, the only alternative was to get drunk and play hockey!"

You should note that those rankings are for virtual worlds for kids and teens.

Good point. Done.

That's not totally true, my favorite virtual world site, http://www.citypixel.com is US based!
