Bad News for Elsevier, et al.?

Interesting to see that the journal Science is pulling out of the non-profit JSTOR initiative. The publication says it want to take more control of its digital assets, which is understandable, but is also potentially crummy news for profit-seeking providers of electronic archives.

How long until Elsevier, et al., start complaining more loudly about publications dropping out?

What’s Elsevier? How do they figure into the Journal Science story? Has JSTOR brought this on itself? I’ve been frustrated by JSTOR in the past because Google searches on some topics of interest ended at the JSTOR wall, but perhaps, I’ve been thinking of JSTOR in the wrong light … that is, as a barrier to knowledge for us common (unable to pay for access) blokes.
