A Digression on Spiders and Things

A brief personal digression. Was sitting here moments ago and the five-year-old came in to chat for a second before leaving for school. The following dialog resulted:

Him: Daddy, I love you a lot.
Me: Oh, that’s great. Thanks for telling me.
Him: I love you 100-times more than spiders. I wanted you to know.
Me: Oh … thanks, I think.

Good to know where I rank in the insect/human pantheon.

“100-times more than spiders.” You are doing pretty well, Paul. I’ve been compared to a cute hamster. Hard to say who’s on top, except to say that such classifications are grounding, to be sure.

I see an important mental development taking place, rather than spiders vs humans, in that the child’s mind is learning proportions. Neat.
