So, the 3-year-old and the 5-year-old wanted to print things tonight. I sent the jobs to the printer and it jammed. I pulled the paper out, and it jammed again. And then it jammed a third time, this time with a k-k-k-k-k-k-ch sound, the sort of awful sound you expect when you're busily ruining a plastic gear.I looked inside the printer, trying to figure out what was wrong. After fishing around for a bit I found an old American Airlines gold card. How did it get there, I wondered aloud. "I did it," said the five-year-old. "I was hiding it from [name redacted], and I thought it was a good hiding place."
Okay. Start print job again. K-k-k-k-k-k-k-k-ch. More lost plastic teeth. What? What's in there now? I poked and prodded and fished, unable to find anything. And then, I found it. Something. Something that moved. Got a pair of scissors and some tweezers, and fished it out. A plastic bug. What was that doing there?
The three-year old: "I might have have put it there." Why? "Because you said that bugs liked dark places, and I thought that seemed like a dark place my bug would like." Okay. Are there any other bugs, etc. in here? Both sons swear up and down no, so I restart the print job ... success, albeit 30 minutes later.
Plastic bugs in printers. Grace Hopper had no idea what she has wrought. And Brad? Kid stuff.
