Some fascinating data in a Hollywood Reporter piece today, including that CNN leads the way in online news, as well as that it streamed 600-million videos in 2006 (including 67-million around Saddam Hussein’s execution alone).
By way of context, the average primetime cable news audience is around 2.8m a day, or almost 90m a month. That compares to the 51m videos a month CNN alone streamed in 2006.

paul, you are comparing apples to oranges. CNN the cable network may average 2.8 million a day, but it covers in primetime 4 hours of content, plus that number doesn’t include the rest of the day, esp. morning and late afternoon viewing.
CNN.com may have streamed 600m video clips, but excluding their house ads (~50%), if they monetized every one at $10 CPM, they would have brought in only $3m in 2006. That figure doesn’t even cover Anderson Cooper’s new contract ($4m see:http://www.broadcastingcable.com/article/CA6408610.html)
This is the main reason I don’t go to CNN’s site anymore. It takes too God damn long to load their videos. At least give me a text based report. Today had 50% of the stories in video format. Ridiculous. Who has time for that?
