Blog Money-Making Widgets

I've been playing a little with Confabb (a database of conferences) and with Vizu (a networked survey tool). Both are good examples of how people are trying to use widgets to further monetize blog traffic, in these cases by putting conference registration and survey collection, respectively, out onto blogs. We are going to see more and more of this stuff, with the original blog 100% reliance on Adsense real soon looking vestigial and outdated.

Two questions for Confabb though:
  1. Getting payment for referring registrants, whatever the merits of the model, is nowhere to be seen. Why not, and why would anyone run Confabb badges without it?
  2. Why can't I filter by region? I want to see all conferences within 30 miles of San Diego, which is not the same thing as doing a keyword search for "San Diego".
