China: Protectionism vs Politics

Like Google's Sergey Brin, I keep wondering how much of the current China crackdown on websites is political ideology, and how much is really just typical protectionism with an ideological comb-over.

My take: This issue skews much more towards protectionism than ideologues (here and in China) think. Leave the Chinese market and you will go a long way toward helping the Chinese government achieve its real goals, which are more economical than political.

I completely agree. Look at Korea. It has been doing the same thing forever and you never even hear about it.

Everyone talks about China's failure to protect IP and then you have the most unbelievably ridiculous trademark decision against Starbucks in Korea and it gets almost no press.

Instead of saying everything is politics, we should be saying everything is economics.
