Prison is Good for Your Health
Prison is apparently good for your health:The nation's state prison officials reported that 12,129 inmates died while in custody from2001 through 2004, the Justice Department's Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) announced today. The deaths over this four-year period constituted an annual mortality rate of 250 deaths per 100,000 inmates, which was 19 percent lower than the adult mortality rate in the U.S. general population.[via PR Newswire]

A shank a day keeps the warden away...
I've heard that the rate of drug use, crime and AIDS transmission is higher in prison. This is an odd statistic. The lower average age mentioned by Ace is one factor but doesn't seem enough to explain it.
I have heard that older inmates with terminal diseases are given an early release to avoid health care costs, dumping the problem on local facilities.
Does that include or exclude executions?

I would like to know what the age distribution of the prisoner population is. If the prison population is younger than the population at large, these stats don't mean much. They should compare apples to apples.
And it would be interesting to compare the causes of death as well.
