Blog Money-Making Widgets
I've been playing a little with Confabb (a database of conferences) and with Vizu (a networked survey tool). Both are good examples of how people are trying to use widgets to further monetize blog traffic, in these cases by putting conference registration and survey collection, respectively, out onto blogs. We are going to see more and more of this stuff, with the original blog 100% reliance on Adsense real soon looking vestigial and outdated. Two questions for Confabb though:
- Getting payment for referring registrants, whatever the merits of the model, is nowhere to be seen. Why not, and why would anyone run Confabb badges without it?
- Why can't I filter by region? I want to see all conferences within 30 miles of San Diego, which is not the same thing as doing a keyword search for "San Diego".

USuggest.com allow the bloggers to make some extra money through recommend products directly from within their blogs, and hopefully directing their readers to the some online retailers. As such, the respective blogger would receive a commission from any sales generated through referrals!

Paul,
Thanks for taking a look at Confabb.
1. The reason for the badges is to let people know where you will be. Attendees can let people know where they will be for networking, and speakers can self promote their panels, sessions and even themselves. We feel the badge is a great way to let folks know where your professional or recreational interests lie and is a fantastic tool for networking and getting the most of your conference or trade show experience.
2. To answer your question on filtering. We know! At launch we faced with the decision of how long to spend building and when to release it to the public. After careful consideration we decided now was the right time to launch and let the users dictate what we should roll out next. Well we have heard you (personally and the community) loud and clear. We have already begun to work on increased search functionality, including but not limited to proximity search, saved search, and alerts.
Thank you for your feedback and please keep it coming.
