Cisco Gets in the Best Quote on the iPhone

Cisco -- the owner of the trademark "iPhone" -- definitely got in the best quote today concerning Apple's newly launched phone of the same name:
Given Apple's numerous requests for permission to use Cisco's iPhone
trademark over the past several years and our extensive discussions
with them recently, it is our belief that with their announcement
today, Apple intends to agree to the final document and public
statements that were distributed to them last night and that address a
few remaining items we expect to receive a signed agreement today.
Translation1: Cisco is saying that Apple really, really wanted this name, and so they had better sign right f-ing now on the dotted line, because Cisco think it has 'em dead to rights.

Translation2 (courtesy of a reader): I read it the other way around -- by just going ahead and using the name, Apple told Cisco to fuck off and launch the lawsuit unless they (Cisco) were willing to cave on the final issues in the negotiation.

One has to wonder (!) whether this was coincidental. Surely Cisco dragged this out 'til the last minute.

I like the translations. I'd guess there is a little bit of each of them going on. These guys are not beginners, so I don't think there are any accidents here. They're in the middle of a negotiation and are probably using these events and statements to gain leverage.
