'Tis the Gift List Season
Just for fun, I've been trying to keep track of all the wish list sites out there that people have mentioned to me this year (not counting wish lists at Amazon et al.). A partial list so far:Interestingly, I'm not a big fan of any of them yet. Hey, maybe we need a wish list site for better wish list sites.
Just to be clear, what do I want? Beyond the obvious stuff, I want a wish list site with the following features:
- Not everything need be linked to other online sites. In other words, I can say nice white shirt, or equivalent.
- I can insert my own Amazon/etc ID. I know that seems crass, but it would be nice to be able to do it.
- I want people viewing the site to see the things that have have been bought, but I can't tell by looking which things are bought.
- I want a bookmarklet/SMS interface so I can add to the wishlist spontaneously. I never remember what it is that I wanted by the time I get in front of my PC/laptop.
- I want broad support of price comparison engines and commerce sites, not just a front-end for Amazon.

Paul, A friend and I have tinkered with this type of a product for a few years now on a site called Gift List It. It's just a side project for friends and family... but we have a couple of the features you requested including allowing for people to see things that have been bought. I'd absolutely value and respect your opinion! Cheers.
There are also wishcentral.com (which seems not to be under active development, although it's still useful).
www.wishlistcomplete.com is also a great website for having a consolidated wish list.
WishListComplete.com, a website established in 2006, encourages charitable donations as a gift giving option.
What is unique about WishListComplete.com?
1) Convenience—See all of your on-line and in-store wish lists in one place. If someone asks you what you want for your birthday, instead of telling them all the places you have a wish list, just tell them, “I have everything on www.WishListComplete.com!”
2) Contribution—A charitable contribution can be one of your wish list items! Helping others is a great gift to give or receive.
3) Its Green!—Reduce your carbon footprint on the world by donating to charity, planting a tree, or offering to volunteer as a gift for others.
