Quiz: Stock Ticker Letters

As an entirely unrelated part of another recent project I was messing around with a list of stock tickers. So, some quiz questions. As always, highlight after the question mark on each line to see the answer:

  1. Which first-letter is most popular among U.S. stock tickers? “C” is most popular. “A”, which I thought would be most popular, comes in second place.
  2. Which first-letter of a ticker is the most unpopular?  “Y” with only 15 companies using it as the first letter of their ticker.
  3. Which first letter is the most sought after, in percentage terms? In other words, if you go after a different ticker than the first letter of your company name, what letter do you go to? “X” is way ahead as the most popular.
  4. Which first letter is the least sought after, in percentage terms? In other words, if you go after a different ticker than the first letter of your company name, what letter do you tend to avoid? “Q” is way ahead as the most abandoned.
