China and World of Warcraft Statistics

From today’s N.Y. Times, some staggering statistics on World of Warcraft’s rise since its launch two years ago:

  • 7m active subscribers paying average $14/mo
  • $1b in revenue this year
  • First major online game to have more subscribers in China than in U.S.
  • Arguably the most lucrative single media property anywhere

As an aside, I’ve never used it, thus pegging me as a gaming dinosaur.
