Weather Geeks Only: Santa Ana in Graph Form
We're in the middle of a glorious Santa Ana here in Southern California -- crisp, dry, and achingly clear, like an atmospheric lens delivering 360-degree 20/10 vision -- so I thought I'd give a more empirical sense of what it feels like. Check the following figure for how the bottom has fallen out of relative humidity here over the last 24 hours.It's like all the moisure was wicked out of the atmosphere.

Guilty as charged. While they do sometimes make my contact lenses feel like they're turning to papyrus, I still like the things.
It also fits in a fascination with the combustible ecoysystem here in SoCal. Some of my favorite reading is about the fire-adapted landscape, chaparral, and Santa Anas contributing to unholy conflagrations. Big fan of Stephen Pyne's books, for example, on the relationship between wildfires and settlement patterns in the U.S.
Santa Anas are the thing I miss the least after moving to the Bay Area. They would dry out my skin and my contact lenses, create annoying static electricity, and even cause pads of paper to curl up. I didn't realize people liked them.
