Google.org: Financial Innovation vs. Financial Control

I love experimentation as much as the next guy, so I'm fascinated by the latest news on Google.org. The idea of doing a for-profit charity is an interesting one, even if the word "charity" isn't really the right one for it. It gets around many of the issue with traditional charities, opens up possibilities for being more influential than the small-ish amount of money committed. I applaud the move.

Concerns? There will always be a temptation to pull profits out of Google.org to offset shortfalls at Google, should such mini-disasters one-day happen. The company says it won't happen, but if we've learned anything from Enron it is that financial adventures like this don't always lead to where shareholders wish they would.

Comparing Google.org to LJM! Now that's a brilliantly twisted concept.

Yet I don't think it's pulling profits out that's the likely scenario. Hiding CAPEX maybe! Getting Google.org donors to park a datacenter on their books for a quarter or two? Hmmmm....

Good Craic.
