There is a fascinating paper on animal-based wireless sensors in the latest issue of IEEE Network:

A Wireless Biosensor Network Using Autonomously Controlled Animals
Research shows that animals can be guided remotely by stimulating regions of the brain. Thus, it is possible to set up an animal wireless sensor network for search and rescue operations.
