Dabble DB and the Enterprise 2.0 Opportunity

I planned to post on this tomorrow, but I see the news is already breaking, and Om has the scoop: the venture firm Ventures West (that I advise) in Vancouver has closed a Series A financing round of Dabble DB. Om has it mostly right, especially the huge opportunity for Andrew Catton's and Avi Bryant's much-lauded startup.

I think of Dabble DB as the first truly "Enterprise 2.0" company. The company's product ties together the "good bits" of recent consumer technologies -- lightweight, service-based, data-centric, etc. -- and brings them into the enterprise market, and charges a subscription fee for the resulting product. Think of Dabble DB as an application, but also as the foundation for a generation of fast-growing, data-drenched new services.

Finally, one small correction/comment to Om's post: The investment size has not been announced, whether larger or smaller than the number Om cites.

i love dabble, its a great technology demonstrator. but i am not entirely sure what else it can be. the market for very small databases has disappeared into the countless domain-specific websites that already provide data organization tools, and many generic sites like yahoo groups are "good enough" and already provide support to people who were looking for it at some point (years ago). anything above this level and people will correctly question why they should be putting semi-valuable data on a startup's server. above this, people run databases.

Wow -- awesome to see a another cool visionary company like this sprouting up in Vancouver. Could this be VW's Flickr?

And is Smalltalk set to resurge in popularity as a result?

Congratulations, I think it is a great product with great potential and Andrew and Avi have what it takes to make it happen.

Well done Dabble DB, well done Paul, well down VW.

I saw Dabble presnt in the valley at the UNDER THE RADAR conference I moderated in March. They won the award for best company, hands down, so it is no mistake that funding should follow.

Plus after meeting the guys over beers I can tell you they rock, are low key, easy to talk to, humble and most of all build kick ass tech.

It is also good to see more VCs walking up to web 2.0, so far its been Ambient Vector for Celtic and Now Public for Brightspark. Although I know a few more are in the works, it is good to see established funds like Ventures West turning their minds to this.

As for Enterpise 2.0, maybe web 2.0 b2b would be better called “web 2.1″?

Congratulations!

Looking for a good term to use for the next generation web applications in the B2B space.

Enterprise 2.0 doesn't sound quite right (and version numbers for concepts is sooo 2005).

Paul - no way do I want to rain on your parade but...when this was in closed beta, I pinged Avi about the lack of calculation functionality. At the time he said he guessed it'd be a bummer for accounting types like me. It remains a bummer in that respect.

If you/Avi et al want to see mass adoption then they really need to pay attention to this aspect. Because beyond the consumer listing type of apps, where does this go for day to day use? Especially as the model requires income.

But hey - the general idea is bang on for me and my audience.

And yes - I know there is some crude calculation functions but they're really unclear and buried.

Help me on this as when I first saw it I was very enthusiastic. That hasn't changed but the candle flame could easily be extinguished.
