Mpire & The Web is the Database, Part II
I've been playing with Mpire, a newly-launched price comparison engine focused on used products. There are lots of interesting things about it, ranging from interface to the used market, but I am particularly intrigued by the company's repurposing of historical data to create price trend graphs for products of interest.For example, the following is the 30-day used price trend for Callaway's X460 driver:


Once again, The Web is the Database. (Life could get interesting for Kelley Blue Book.)

It is spoofable, but there is a law of large numbers here in the most active categories. Nevertheless, assuming quality is decent life just got tougher for Kelley Blue Book.









and unlike other databases - you can spoof this one! much of the seller data in ebay is already spoofed we know by power sellers. pick a product on craigslist - cadillac escalades, for example. prices are all over the place. what matters is the SALE price. that said, this is a neat idea and is a tonic to other services like kelly blue book. wonder how they'll make money.
