AC Culture and To Live and EVDO in LA

I am at LAX between flights, and my EVDO wireless service is a life-saver. How did people get along without this essential information oxygen?

An aside: We members of AC (alternating current) culture are so easily spotted. We wander through airports like monk-ish penitents, heads bowed as we scan for an unused plug-in into which we can connect our laptops. How bad is it? I physically bumped into someone a little while ago here in Terminal 3 as both us traipsed around, eyes down and scanning. I'm now on the floor, jammed between a public phone and an irate German on his cell.

Getting power: I recomend using 1950s technology, "the extension cord". I carry one in place of the extender on my power supply. It's no panacea, but a 15 foot reach is a big help at airports, for example. Plus it creates a social externality. Surprising how few people do this!

Roger -- An excellent idea. The only problem: I currently travel with so many cords that I sometimes worry on customs inspection I'll be harassed as a mufti electrical dealer. I have cords for two cell phones (don't ask), plus my laptop, plus miscellaneous USB-fluvia.

A spare battery may be easier to carry then a long cable :-)

How about the airports put in more receptacles? Maybe even a few in the floor underneath each row of seats in the boarding gate lounges. I laughed at the post because I did the exact same thing at the Tampa airport (which has FREE wireless). I even graciously gave my receptacle up after a while to another fellow aimlessly searching for the elusive wall plug. BTW, the problem with the cords is that the outlets are inevitably 5 feet or more from the seats and everyone passing either does, or nearly trips over them.

Funny, I've done that.

What's interesting is that lately I've noticed several Starbucks putting in exta AC outlets in their cafe's just for us. . .

The Tampa wireless is great. Had a 3 hour weather delay there recently and having my laptop online helped pass the time considerably.
