Google's "Company a Week" Plan
According to Google CEO Eric Schmidt at a cosy eight-person lunch for journalists in New York, the company is buying a company a week. Really? That implies 11 companies purchased so far this year, but I, for one, sure can't name 'em all.Second, while most media outlets are parroting Schmidt's statement from the luncheon that Google isn't chasing after Microsoft's Office franchise, only the BBC reporter caught how disingenuous that answer seemed:
...references to Microsoft's co-founder and his empire always come with subtle but loaded asides.Microsoft Office, we're told, is a "tremendous franchise", but it's very expensive. Fine if the New York Times pays for it, as one of my lunch colleagues is told, but what if you have to pay for your own software?
