SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — USA Today is combining its print and online newsrooms in a move that the newspaper hopes will create a news organization that goes beyond an “arm’s-length collaboration,” said USA Today Editor Ken Paulson.

The newspaper and its Web site, USAToday.com, both publications of Gannett Co. Inc., said Monday evening that the newsrooms will be combined to create a single USA Today news operation.

USA Today isn’t planning to cut any of the 500 affected staffers – 425 in print and 75 online – said Steve Anderson, a spokesman. Anderson said the newsrooms will be combined in stages, with no final timeline set.

I’m sure that many of you will have same reaction to this news as I did: You mean they were still separate until now? Yeesh.
