Flock is F***ed

Okay, maybe Flock isn't really and truly f***-ed, but one of the main features many of us -- okay, me -- were looking forward to in Flock was browser-integrated WYSIWYG read/write/delete editing of blogs and server-based content. Well, that feature is here, free, and works better in Performancing's new Firefox extension.

Unbelievably well done bit of coding. Congrats to Nick and Jed.

Only a matter of time (in hindsight) before someone sees what's been done with Flock and does it better. Good for us - bad for Flock, I guess.

Note of bias: I used Flock for a little while, then found it foundered, locked, froze and otherwise failed to work.

Flock is gratis and libre as well. How does Performance work better than Flock's blog editor?

Brian, actually, that's not really how it happened. Long before Flock, heck, long before Firefox there was a great Mozilla extension called mozblog. That extension was revived, ported to Firefox and made better. That's the Performancing extension - not inspired _by_ Flock, probably closer to some of the inspiration _for_ Flock.

And there have been others. Deepest Sender is a really nice Firefox extension for Live Journal blogging that's recently been extended to handle WP and Blogger. It's also been around for years.

Asa, what's your point? Long before Firefox there was Mozilla and Internet Explorer and Lynx and a host of others. We all learn from and inspire each other. Surely there's enough space in this world wide web for a browser that *builds on* your organization's work?

And Paul, I hope you get a lot of traction out of Performancing. It's a decent piece of work and I'm excited to see more Firefox folks getting into blogging. Flock isn't going to be for everyone and nor will Performancing. Isn't it nice to have choice on the web again?

A note on "inspiration"

Personally speaking, I dont mind if people think our little extension was inspired by flock, or mozblog, or even my dog sam's favorite fluffy toy. We just wanted to do something cool for firefox users, cos we all use FF over at performancing, and LOVE IT.

For reference though, our lead (only) dev, Jed, was wanting to do this for a couple of years now:

I see lots of comments from the Flock folks around the web, and quite a few from the FF folks, but again, *personally* speaking, i dont think there is any conflict or competition on our part. We really just want to give FF users (like OURSELVES heh..) something cool to use from the FF browser.

Hope that all makes sense, i've had a hell of a day today and wanted to respond in one of these threads but am sooooo tired hhh!

Regards

Nick

Performancing is a nice little add-in, and Flock's cool too. For a *much* more advanced blog editor, check out RocketPost:

I designed it.

Again, when looking at the bugginess issues, one has to remember that Flock is in its infancy. It is still only a developer preview.

I use Flock as my primary browser. Only once has it crashed on me. Firefox 1.5 has crashed on me countless times.

As for Performancing, I'm not that big a fan. I prefer Flock. I am glad that it came out, and it will lead to more bloggers, but I think that when it comes to blogging, in the long run, Flock will be the browser of choice (when it is in a publically releasable version, of course).

I can't agree more with Dan. I think that Flock will be the browser most bloggers will use when it is a finished product. Why? Because of the philosophy that Flock creators have, which is intensive web collaboration. Web2 is all about sharing images, sound and text using fixed computers, laptops, cell phones and what have you.

Performancing is an excellent extension and together with Firefox will benefit many bloggers; but it's not a browser that was designed strictly for blogging. That's the main difference. Firefox is a traditional browser, and the best one around, mind you. Flock is something else; it's a whole different creature and will keep mutating as the Web2 evolves.

I use Flock a lot, but prefer Firefox for the time being because of its Bookmarks and Spellbound Speller Extension. Flock's use of Delicious is very cumbersome and also lacks a speller. I'm sure these limitations will be taken care in the future.

The best feature for Flock right now is its blazing speed. In my computer it's faster than Opera 8.5, Firefox 1.5 and Internet Explorer 6.0.

I waiting in the wings for Flock's next upgrade.

Just my two cents worth on Flock; a superb set of computer software.
