Update: Screen Survey Results

With more than 100 responses in to my screen real estate survey already, I thought people might be interested in the results so far:

1) How many screens do you have now?

1: 44.6%

2: 50%

3 or more: 5.6%

2) How many screens did you have a year ago?

1: 83%

2: 17%

3 or more: 0%

3) What is your total screen real estate (in inches)?

15 inches or less: 11%

16–19: 28%

20–24: 6%

25–30: 6%

30 or more: 50%

This is remarkable stuff. At least among IGreed readers, there has been very sizable growth year-over-year in the number of people who have gone from a single-screen setup to a multiple-screen setup. A year ago more than 80% of respondents had a single screen, while today that number has shrunk to 50%, with everyone else (apparently) wallpapering the joint with LCD panels.

I have, of course, neglected to ask the obvious question: What are people using that extra panel for? In my case it’s email, widgets, streaming data, and my feed reader — persistent, alert-oriented stuff, in other words. My main workspace, where I browse, work on documents, code stuff, and so on, remains the one right in front of me.

you haven’t lived until you’ve abandoned normal screens and gone with HDTV projection on the wall. at least, that’s what I have done at home…. 14 foot diagonal screen permanently mounted on the wall. turned out to be WAY cheaper than getting any sort of large LCD or Plasma flat panel.
Now, I want wall projection for the office. Or an 80″ diagonal screen. You hear me, Apple?
