J. Paul Getty & How to Become a VC

Perhaps the most common question I get on this site, right up there with “Will you invest in my consumer software startup?”, is “How do I become a VC?” I am always tempted to paraphrase J. Paul Getty and say, “Rise early, work hard, strike a VC on the 101”, but I worry that people will take me seriously and I don’t want to be responsible for the ensuing carnage.

Anyway, Praveen Sahay, a recent Kauffman Fellow, has a post with some less whimsical and more thoughtful ideas on the subject, and it’s well worth reading:

Last month, I graduated from the Kauffman Fellowship program along with seven other venture capitalists. I expect most readers will say, “Uh! What’s a Kauffman Fellowship?” The program is indeed one of the best kept secrets in the venture industry and I’ll tell you why. But before I do that, I want to set the stage by sharing some helpful advice for aspiring venture capitalists.
