Michael Crichton, Just Another Humble Harvard Guy

Here is author Michael Crichton explaining in a letter to a Financial Time journalist why his skeptical views on global warming and the environment should be taken seriously:

I am just an interested observer with a summa cum laude degree and a doctorate from Harvard who happened to look into somebody else’s little private fiefdom, reported what he saw.

Michael’s overstuffed ego reminds of a guy I met while in Costa Rica years ago. I was foolishly preparing to bungee jump off a highway bridge, and was watching as a guy I had met the prior day as a whitewater river guide was stringing up bungee cord. It looked rickety and makeshift, so I was more than a little nervous. I finally turned to the fellow and said, “How do I know this is safe?”

He had no idea what I meant, so I asked again, saying, “Are you, you know, appropriately certified for setting up this sort of thing?”

“I’m Oswaldo,” he replied with some irritation, “the best surfer in Costa Rica.”

Right then, I said, feeling no further ahead. But did I jump? Yes.

A great opening line that always works.
They both remind me of a favourite Red Dwarf episode (Holoship) where the standard crew member intro is your name and your IQ.
How about IQ ratings on conference name badges? Wouldn’t it be nice to swoop in with the 198, arms akimbo and settle group debates? Perhaps the number and some body language would be enough to declare victory…and defeat.

Hmmm. Though MC’s got a big ego, there must be a couple of thousand other Harvard grads who can boast the same credentials.
I wonder if they’re morons too, or if they’re in the 90+% of enlightened people that understand or care about planetary change.

Heard Michael talk to the Commonwealth Club and he sounded like he was running for office. Wonder if that is where he is going next. Why not the Gropinator made it look easy.

Looking for evidence that supports your thesis is self delusion. Looking for evidence that rebuts your thesis is science. You decide if this helps or hurts the global warming thesis.
