Homes as Hummers

Columnist Robert Samuelson had a piece earlier last week (that I missed until now) comparing suburban homes to SUVs. It contained this startling factoid:

Since 1970 the size of the average home has increased 55 percent (to 2,330 square feet), while the size of the average family has decreased 13 percent.

  1. I’d like to see a similar statistic
comparing average lot sizes, and %-of-lot occupied by house.
