Can I Have My Steak Rare, with Hydraulic Fluid?

From a ProMED mailing today:

Emmpak Foods, Inc., Milwaukee, Wis., establishment, is voluntarily recalling approximately 123 000 pounds of ground beef that may be contaminated with hydraulic fluid, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced today. [Emphasis added]

The best part? The names of the products being recalled:

Products subject to recall include:

- –1-pound packages of “GROUND BEEF, WITH NATURAL FLAVORINGS, 73/27.”

- –1-pound packages of “EXTRA LEAN GROUND BEEF, WITH NATURAL FLAVORINGS, 96/4.”

I wasn’t aware that hydraulic fluid was considered a natural flavor, so that is good to know.

For many years I worked with hydraulic powered equipment. Hydraulic fluid never became an acquired taste no matter what the vintage.

I wonder, what if Empack decided “what the heck, its just hydraulic fluid, its not ” and not recalled the contaminated beef? Would I at least stop squeaking? Well, that said, thank god for voluntary recalls.
