Flu and the Beanie-Baby Effect

From today’s WSJ on the misplaced fears about flu vaccine:

“I call it the Beanie Baby effect,” says Gregory A. Poland, director of vaccine research at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. “It’s a scarcity mentality. People perceive that it’s not available, and now they want it.”

Assuming the preceding is true, does that make the CDC Toy ‘r Us? Me thinks so.
