Google Through the Keyhole
News that Google has purchased satellite image database company Keyhole is interesting. While many are playing the news straight up as an example of how Google is expanding its search offerings, more interesting, at least to me, are the implications for meta-tagged images and contextual search.
After all, Keyhole essentially provides images that are defined, in a sense, by their context -- where they are vis-a-vis other locales in adjacent images. That sort of implicit image tagging is intriguing, and fits right in with one of Google's approaches to image search where it guesses an image's content based on the news story in which it appears. On a more consumer level, something similar goes on using photo-sharing apps.
