According to the Corporate Library, as of March 2004:
- 377 CEOs now chair their own boards (a 4% decrease)
- 71 former CEOs now chair their boards
- 16 Chairs are either former or current executives of the firm
- 25 Board chairs are marked as independent, but where last year’s analysis showed that approximately 50% of those had special relationships disclosed in those company’s most recent proxy filing which caused us to question their independence, this year’s report shows that only 26% had these sorts of relationships disclosed
- 156 firms in the S&P 500 now report a lead director
