The Gmail Economy
It had to happen -- a market has grown up around Google's not-yet-launched Gmail email service. On one side of the market you have current Gmail beta users, some of whom apparently are allowed to invite one friend to join the beta; on the other side of the market you have a bunch of people who want to get on Gmail now to try it and to get the best email handles.
The result? People are coming together in the middle in a bizarre swap meet. Gmail "supplicants" are offering everything from $20 cash, to dinner and a movie, to a chance to borrow a car for a week, to a tour of Tokyo. Ah, the wonders of markets.
